Theodore McCarrick recently died. But his legacy — one of suffering and sorrow — lives on.
It was the most sensational trial of the 1980s. Young, debonair Robert Chambers on trial for killing 19-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park, NY. Her body was found half-naked, beaten and strangled. Because of his upscale background, they dubbed him "The Preppy Killer."
During court hearings, one up-and-coming bishop made the unusual choice of taking the stand in defense of Chambers. That bishop was Theodore McCarrick, a longtime and popular fixture in New York, who surrounded himself with boys he called his "nephews" from local Catholic families.
In this groundbreaking investigation, Christine Niles examines a topic others have never looked at in depth: What was McCarrick's exact relationship with Chambers? Did Chambers, like other boys, suffer abuse at McCarrick's hands? Did that potential abuse lead to his psychological problems, drug addiction and failed academics — leading to a years-long rage that exploded one fateful night in Central Park, resulting in the brutal death of a 19-year-old girl?
