More than a few respectable Catholic commentators have claimed that we are living through the gravest crisis the Church has ever faced. If that were so, what would be the significance of that? I try to offer a little perspective based on past councils and conclaves that, if they were to happen today, we might be thinking of our present moment slightly differently.
