With the trend of memes featuring phrases like Deus Vult in an ever increasing climate of cultural clash and instability in the West, some people are wondering where the line between irony and sincerity is. I received a message this week from a viewer asking why Christians don't call for a new crusade. Is it because they are too weak compared to their medieval ancestors? Simultaneously, many still consider the Crusades to be an unambiguous moral evil and a moment in the Church's history in which it strayed from the original teachings of Jesus. They point to the fact that the early Church was nonviolent, even though it was violently persecuted. So did the Church embrace hypocrisy by eventually taking up the sword against its enemies?
