Today, I want to talk about a statement Mel Gibson made during his recent interview with Joe Rogan. In the conversation, he said, “I don’t adhere to the post-conciliar Church,” which is a fancy of way saying that he rejects the Second Vatican Council. Now, to be fair, there were some truly inspiring moments in the interview where Mel passionately shared the Gospel and reached a broad audience. However, his comment about rejecting the post-conciliar Church raises serious concerns, particularly in light of the growing influence of radical traditionalist movements among younger Catholics seeking a strong sense of identity and tradition. Comments like these can unintentionally foster division and misunderstanding within the Church. My aim in this video is specifically address this particular issue. Let’s start with the clip of Mel Gibson then I’ll share my thoughts along with insights from Bishop Barron. Here we go
This brings me to a key point: I’ve never understood how, as a Catholic, you can pick and choose which councils to accept and which to reject. You are essentially sawing off the very branch you are standing on by rejecting an ecumenical council—convened by the Church in union with the bishops of the world under the authority of the Successor of Peter. In doing so, you’re not just rejecting a council; you’re rejecting a core element of what it means to be Catholic.
