In the latest episode of Road to Emmaus, Scott Hahn sits down with the St. Paul Center staff to lead their biweekly Bible Study.
In this episode, they go through John 10 to unpack the various meanings of "life" that Jesus refers to. We see in John 10 that Jesus uses two different words for life (according to the original Greek writing): zōē and psychē.
What's the difference between these words for life?
"Zōē" means Life in its absolute form, whereas "psychē" refers to the natural and physical kind of life (human soul). So what Jesus means in John 10 is that He will lay down His psychē (His human life) so that we may obtain zōē (Eternal Life).
