Hey everyone, I’m Joseph Dinesh, a Catholic commentator from Sydney, Australia. Imagine this—it’s Ash Wednesday. You walk into church, approach the priest, and receive the cross of ashes on your forehead. It’s a sacred moment symbolizing repentance and humility, reminding us of our mortality: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” But as you leave, a group of young non-denominational Protestants stops you and says, “Wait a minute! Hindus use ashes in their worship too, so Catholics need to stop using ashes on Ash Wednesday. It’s a pagan ritual and demonic!” That’s exactly what this group of young Protestants say—let's listen.
This argument is based on a misunderstanding of Catholic teaching. The claim suggests that because Hindus use ashes in their rituals and attribute special powers to them, Catholics must also be attributing similar magical powers to ashes when they use them on Ash Wednesday. From this assumption, and because many Protestant denominations label practices from other religions as "demonic," they conclude that Catholics are unknowingly participating in pagan or demonic rituals.
