The Trump administration’s newly implemented tariffs have sparked debate over their potential impact on U.S. manufacturing. While the White House argues that these measures will revive the industry, experts remain divided. Shawn Fain, President of the United Auto Workers Union, has expressed support for the auto tariffs, saying that his organization has begged Democrats and politicians for years to get the auto companies in line. However, the United Steelworkers Union acknowledges tariffs as useful tools but insists they must be paired with broader trade reform. Meanwhile, automaker Stellantis has temporarily halted production at plants in Mexico and Canada, leading to 900 temporary layoffs in the U.S. Michael Strain, Director of Economic Policy Studies and the Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute, joins to discuss how these tariffs will play out. He shares his thoughts on the support from the United Auto Workers Union and explains the kind of reform the United Steelworkers Union suggests.
