Most denominations, today, believe that Matthew 19 gives and exception that would allow Christians to divorce. But if their interpretation is correct, it would force Jesus to contradict himself.

As someone with divorced parents, when I started to learn about Christianity and even became a Christian myself, I found a lot of consolation in the seriousness with which the faith treats marriage and divorce. Especially in a society that talks about divorce as some kind of progressive and empowering reality.

The Bible treats marriage as something way more than a mere civil contract. It says that God joins to people together and that they become ONE flesh - to the degree that it would be impossible to separate them without killing them.
