In a New York courtroom on Wednesday, a judge heard arguments in the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal U.S. resident who was arrested and detained by federal agents over the weekend after his green card was revoked by the Trump administration. According to his lawyer, Khalil, who was born in Syria and raised in a Palestinian refugee camp, now faces an uncertain legal battle. Khalil gained attention last year for helping lead demonstrations at Columbia University against Israel’s war in Gaza. The Trump administration has alleged that he is a supporter of the terror group Hamas, but authorities have not charged him with any crime or presented any evidence linking him to Hamas. Today's hearing took a more procedural turn as Khalil's lawyers argue that he engaged in protected free speech and that the U.S. government is illegally retaliating against him. Immigration attorney Paul Hunker joins us to explain what kind of protection green cards really offer and whether the U.S. has the right to revoke them. Hunker also describes who defines suspicious activity as President Trump vows on social media that Khalil's arrest is the first "of many to come."
