Hey everyone, I’m Joseph Dinesh, a Catholic commentator from Sydney, Australia. Let’s be honest—we all like to believe that when we give, we’ll get something back. Whether it’s appreciation, loyalty, or even just a simple ‘thank you,’ we naturally expect some form of return. But history—and life—has shown us that giving with expectations almost always leads to disappointment. And there’s no better example of this than Mansa Musa, the 14th-century ruler of Mali and one of the wealthiest men in history. In 1324, on his pilgrimage to Mecca, he didn’t just travel—he rained gold on cities, rulers, and even beggars, convinced that his generosity would earn him powerful alliances, trade deals, and lasting influence. But here’s the twist—instead of earning favor, he wrecked Egypt’s economy. Gold became so common that its value crashed, merchants suffered, and instead of gratitude, his wealth left behind economic chaos. And in the end? All the gold he gave away brought him nothing in return.
